Does anyone have information on the limited edition Fender TE Telecaster that was released around 6 or 7 years ago? Apparently, only 160 were made from the Fender Mexico factory, the color was blue and strangely, were not numbered.

UPDATE:

I have been able to find the details of the limited edition 'Tommy Tele' (see below). Out of only 160 of this series made, I own one and an old associate of mine owns another, so I pose the next question...

Where are the other 'Tommy Tele' owners?. Spread the word and let's see if we can make the list (login names are ok..)

UPDATE:

* About serial numbers: According to Fender USA, TT owners should check the last 3 digits of their serial number and it should range between 001 and 160. We are hoping to confirm this numbering sequence is true. If you own a TT, please post your last 3 digits along with your user name and we will add it to the list.

UPDATE:

Interview with Tommy Emmanuel: "Tommy: I had my own Fender Telecaster Signature Model in Australia. They made 160 of them and they shipped them to Australia and they all sold in a month."

TT Owner _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Last 3 digits in serial #:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1: Tommy Emmanuel - - - 001 (naturally..)
2: JacksonMoon - - - - - 087
3: NHarvey - - - - - - - -
4: Linds - - - - - - - - - - 110
5: bjnmusicman - - - - - -
6: BeBe - - - - - - - - - -
UPDATE:
TT Models were produced in 1998
I saw one of these Tele's on ebay.com.au (Australian eBay). I already have 2 tele's so wasn't overly fussed. It was the blue one and was going for about £600. Might have been relisted, never know.
Cheers,
Dale
This was my post - and I actually own a TE Journeyman Tele (blue/3 pick up model). I'm just unable to find any details about this model.
The workmanship is excellent however I replaced the pickups with Kinman vintage broadcasters and a vintage '62 in the middle. The result is an axe with all the snarl and growl of a vintage Tele.
Hopefully someone or maybe Tommy himself may provide some specs or other titbits about this rare model.
I have the answers to my own question after following Hawkeye's advice and contacting Fender. Thanks also to Julie from Fender who emailed the details about 5 minutes after my request. Howzat that for service!
Firstly, I am very happy to find out I have a very rare model - only 100 of these guitars were made in 1997/1998 to the following specs..
  • only 100 made
  • Known as the 'Tommy Tele'
  • Body - Alder with Ash veneer
  • Neck - one piece Maple
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • 21 medium jumbo frets
  • Wite pearl pickguard
  • Signature on headstock
  • 'TE' logo on identifying neck plate
  • 2 tex-mex Tele pickups (neck/bridge)
  • 1 tex-mex Strat pickup (middle) ... see note below re: pickups
  • 5 way Strat-o-tone select switch
  • Usa vintage 6 saddle Tele bridge
  • Vintage Kluson machine heads
  • Color - Saphire Blue transparent
* Re pickups. Everything about this guitar felt good at the time I bought it, however I felt the Tex Mex's were lacking in tone, so I swapped the neck/bridge picups with the Kinman 'Vintage Broadcasters' and the middle pickup withe Kinman 'Vintage '62 Strat' pickup. The difference these pickups have made to the sound are amazing. The Kinmans add all the twang and growl of a vintage Telecaster.
Fender decided to (on some insane inpulse....) omit individual numberuing on the guitar, although I am yet to determine if numbers are branded inside the guitar somewhere in the elecronics. Either way, only 100 were made and I am jumin' jack flash that I own one.
I should thank a former associate of mine for telling me about the Tommy Tele all those years ago. He also has one.
I do believe TE has one, we picked it up from Fender while in Sydney to do a corporate show with the band.
Fender Custom Shop made a Signature TE Telecaster. As far as I am aware there was only 25 made. I have 001 with me, wonder who has the others.
2: Nick Harvey
Re TE signature Series. I know a guy who serves drinks at a well known Casino that has another of the TE signature series. He bought it when they were released. Interestingly, he can't play a note on the guitar and purchased it as in investment.
One night when I was gigging at the same Casino where he works, he took the guitar in and let me play it. I also had my Tommy Tele so I was able to compare the two Tommy signature models.
I found both were very well made and had distinctive tones. At that point I still had the tex mex's on my Tommy Tele (later changed to the Kinman Vintage Broadcaster set) so I preferred the sound coming out of the custom shop TE, but these days the Kinmans might tip me the other way. Neck wise, I preferred my Tommy Tele with its smooth '67 style neck over the chunky custom shop model - but that's just a personal preference. The custom shop TE was awesome through my 4 x 10 Blues Deville.
Re Tommy Tele - of course, Tommy would have one.. How did I miss that? That makes 97 to go..
It's a pity they didn't put Bartolini pick-ups in it like TE has in his "67 Tele".
Hi folks so far away from me,
I asked Fender back in 99 for more informations about the Tommy Tele.
They were very kind and I got a quick response.
The specs are already wrote here, except that there is a Fender Deluxe Gig Bag with the guitar.
I can give some infos about the serial numbers too:
David O“Loughlin from Fender Australia wrote "The serial numbers on this model are not unique but range within MN811xxxx to MN812xxxx"
Hope that helps
I got my TE Tele in 99 from a very special guy when he was on tour here in germany. We met again in a studio. It was a kind of "Deal of friends". He sold it to me and I promised not to resell it until the day he wants it back for his doughter.
So I“m a VERY lucky Te Telly Keeper this time...
Best wishes and keep on pickin
Hi there jacksonmoon.
Yep, I've got one of Tommy's blue Tele's. Bought it on the same day as I bought a John Lennon Revolution Casino as well as a cheap(ish) bass for my daughter. That was one hell of a spend up......and it took a bit of explaining to a less than amused wife!!
The guitar is great although the action is a touch too high for me and taking it back to the shop for adjustment didn't bring terrific results. I tend to use my Strat more 'cause I prefer the feel. But when I do pick up the Tele I like the sound. I did ask TE at a workshop if he thought a set of Bartollini's would be a good idea and he looked horrified. He was convinced that the factory installed pickups had plenty of sting. So I'm intrigued at your experiment with dropping in a set of Kinmans. I've never used them but I've never read a bad review of them. Maybe I'll have to look into it. The guitar is certainly lovely to look at. That see through blue finish is really an eye catcher. The only real problem seems to be some hassles with the bridge saddle on the first string. It has a tendency to buzz and needs regular looking at. AndI can't help wondering if the guitar might have had better resale value if it had been made in the USA rather than Mexico. I know that would have added to the price, but TE as a musician is surely worth the better manufacturing results that the US makers would bring. My cynicism says that Fender made this decision because TE wasn't that well known in the States. I'll bet James Burton's Tele isn't made in Mexico! But that's a soapbox for another time....
Anyway, what does that make? 96 to go?
Cheers
Linds
