I have had my new Taylor 201E since 11/06. It came with Elixir strings. Beyond that I know very little about strings. I can see that there is some discoloration on the strings in the areas that I most often play. The guitar sounds good, but probably not as good as when the strings were new. So maybe it's time for some new strings? But what kind should I get? I am learning finger style, practicing TE tunes, I play blues, Clapton, James Taylor and some country, all finger style. I play mostly at home, alone, tormenting my poor wife. What kind of strings should I buy? I really enjoy reading your discussions and I appreciate that there are others who share my passion. God bless TE for what he has done to us! |

Hey David, When it comes to strings, it's pretty much all about preference, if your not really digging your tone, then I would try experimenting around with different string brands, try D'Addario's, try some Martins, and my personal favorites are the one's it sounds like you have on now; the elixirs. I read an interview with Tommy, where he said he likes to mix up his strings, so for example he will lace up his B string with Martin's, then maybe his E string with D'Addario's, now you don't have to get that technical, but I would recommend just experimenting around. - Andy |

When he was saying about mixing strings, he thought about changing whole sets.
Mixing strings from few sets is like suicide for ears. |

| I have a Martin and I use Martin SP 80/20's. I had the action on the neck lowered so that I have to use medium gauge strings to pull up the neck far enough that I don't get fret buzz. The 80/20's have a rich, deep sound. I have tried a lot of others but they are not quite as good in my opinion. I use to use all light gauge strings cuz its easier to do the licks, but someone gave me the SP's for Xmas one year and thats what I have been using ever since. But its all about preference. Lenny Breau used a nylon A string to give him a high A on the Living Room Tapes - he called it fishing line. He says that just before he rips thru the Claw. Chet sometimes used bass guitar strings for his E and A string - at least on some songs it has been said that he did. But don't pay too much attention to me, my knowledge is very limited in this area. Experiment. |

Hi there,
Funny you mention mixing string brands, all the time that I have worked with TE his guitars have always had the same brand across all six strings. Maybe he was referring to recording and was trying something or he ran short of a string gauge at a gig, it happens. He does use different brands of strings on each of his guitars alot, but then again some nights he'll use one brand. |

Hi there,
What TE says in that youtube clip is true, that EBG808TE (Mouse 2) loves Martin SP lights (.012-/.054). The old "Mouse" never sounded right with Martin strings. I would say the reason that the guitar would have been strung with D'Addario EJ16 strings is normally I would ask TE, any preference tonight and he would have said lets try D'Addario tonight. That guitar gets restrung after sound check and left in the dressing room for him to play and settle in. I don't stress if he comes out and says "lets put on a fresh set these don't feel right". |

| Hawkeye - does Tommy use more than one set of strings on the same guitar for a one night performance ? Does he ever play a nylon string guitar ? |

Hi there,
The EBG808TE gets a fresh set of strings every show no matter what. The TE1 and the Jumbo normally get restrung after every third show unless requested. On some occasions TE has asked me to change all the strings on the EBG808TE during the break, but this is not a common occurrence.
The last time TE used a nylon string guitar during a show here in Australia was 2003. We had a run off shows with an orchestra so TE asked me to bring his Moyce nylon string and the Buscarino nylon string out of storage. |

Hi there,
TE likes the Martin "Eric Clapton" strings, but the Martin SP lights (.012-.054) get used way more than the "Eric Clapton" strings.
