Hi Tommy,

I'm a pediatric oncologist at Duke University. When a family or patient tells me that I made a difference in their life, it makes my day. So I want to pay it forward.

Before medical school I studied classical guitar with this guy named John Sutherland. He and Christopher Parkening studied together with Segovia. Parkening went on to a performance career and John decided to pursue teaching. He was a great teacher. Early in my work with him he told me that I had a lot to learn, but that I was as ''musical' as anyone he had met and I should go for it. I worked hard, but then I went to medical school to learn some skills to help people and earn a living, but it was stultifying in some ways, and time demands pushed guitar to the side, which was very hard for me. But after 4 years of medical school and three years of residency, I found some space open up and I tried lessons with John again. As I played, he said, your technique is good, but where is your music? He was right. The music had died.

Ten years passed and I was a bone marrow transplant doc at St Jude, and now am at Duke. Three years ago I discovered your music. Here is the pay-forward: your playing woke up music in me again. I have spent hundreds of hours paying attention to how you create music that brings people alive - brings me alive. This has mattered so much to me, and I am very very grateful.

Last month I flew up for you workshop in New Jersey - I was late because my GPS messed up and I had to leave early because my flight was at 6:30 and out of Phili. But I learned so much.

Yesterday I got another break from work and flew over to Little Rock to participate in the workshop. I was the guy (no need to remember!) to your immediate left, with the Maton, who asked about the time you played 'To Be or Not To Be' with Chet, towards the end of his life. Those three hours were such an enormous gift. I am in the middle of some important family stuff (nothing new there), and Saturday I spoke at the funeral of this 15 year patient I adored but could not cure. I needed a reminder of deep music in our lives. You gave that to me, and I am just so grateful.

You mentioned that you have three more concerts before this tour ends. I hope you get to have some rest at home without restlessness. Adam Rafferty helped me get to the meet-and-greet in Durham, NC where you signed my guitar, and he has told me incredible stories about your devotion to connecting with your audience. I will never have an audience (my hands shake in front of people when I play, so I only get your arrangements straight when I am by myself, having lots of fun), but I am going to give to my patients and families what you give to all of us who have been changed by your music and generosity.

So, thank you.

Best,

Ray

Thank you for inspiring me Tommy. It's refreshing to find a creative spark that fills the soul with a damn good feeling lol. I put my headphones on, turn on me some Tommy and the world disappears. Thank you for being unique :)

Hi Tommy. My wife, my son, and his girlfriend caught your show at the Elgin Community College on September18. We enjoyed it very much! Thanks for 'making us happy', and for sticking around after to sign autographs. I was near the end of the line and had you sign a picture. I'm a 56 year old guitar picker, and your wonderful playing has inspired me to get busy brushing up my skills so I can get out and perform again. (I've only been playing at church the last few years.) I also want to learn at least a few of the tunes you play - I especially like Halfway Home and Warm and Windy, and the Beatles Medley.... Thanks for all you do to help and inspire guitar players young and old. P.S. I hope your arm is doing better. (Sometimes mine hurts, too.) Mark

Tommy, my wife and I saw your fabulous concert in Salina, Kansas, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We are both self taught guitar players, and in this concert you gave a few minutes of instruction on how to practice. We are applying this advice, and seeing immediate results. Just wanted to thank you for this help in advancing our guitar skills!

You probably won't get this Tommy. And you've had a million and one accolades by now I'm sure. So just another fan sayin' thanks. I guess I could leave a laundry list of adjectives describing my reactions to your one in a million ability. Your music hits where it counts. Big Big smiles happen here as I'm sure you witness time and time and again. I wish I could shake your hand in person, give ya a 'man hug' and say thanks. Life has many good and bad things it it. It can get tough for us all. Your music provides a rest point. A TRULY unmatched phenomenon as far as I am concerned. Thanks for playing, thanks for your hard work, and thank you for sharing. So out to the big 'fan response void' this goes. And by chance if the laws of physics hold true, this message may somehow count for something.

Hi Tommy,

My brother, bought a nice birthday present, to watch you live at the anvil in Basingstoke, back in March we both really enjoyed your music, it has now inspired me to learn to play the guitar.
